National Poetry Month
National Poetry Month began in 1996 as an initiative of the Academy of American Poets to establish a month-long, national celebration of poetry. Here’s a summary from The Academy of American Poets website at Poets.org:
The concept is to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. We hope to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.
Joining me today on the program to talk about National Poetry Month is Tyler Barton and Erin Dorney from The Triangle, a regional Central PA website that publishes ongoing news
about the literary communities in Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg. They also keep on ongoing calendar of events and created a special National Poetry Month calendar dedicated to literary events happening in the area in April. You can download the calendar here.
Also joining me is Daina Savage, a Lancaster-based poet and journalist who served as the second Lancaster Poet Laureate and runs the LancasterPoetry.com website. Daina is also responsible for organizing the 12th Annual Spoken Word Festival coming up on April 26 and 27 at The Snavely Family Theatre at Linden Hall in Lititz, PA. GET OUT! with Steve Carlson
Steve Carlson brings us news from around the Lancaster visual arts scene and shares his picks for what to check out on this upcoming First Friday in Lancaster. Steve is a writer and teacher at the New School of Lancaster. He also producers theater with the Wood Stove House and serves on the board of Creative Works of Lancaster.
